Let's talk about lemons

This probably sounds really trite and pointless, but bear with me.  My dear readers, you must know by now that I end up making a point that blows your mind at least 83% of the time (and yes, that is a TV reference).  I want to take a moment to talk about lemons.  Yes, I said lemons.

When you think about a lemon, what comes to mind?  It makes me think of several things.  When you buy a vehicle and it turns out to have major issues that were undisclosed by the seller, it's referred to as a lemon.  When someone wants to trick a dog or a toddler into eating something unpleasant but harmless, they usually go for a slice of lemon.  Lemons are unexpectedly bitter if you aren't prepared to experience them.  Overall, a lemon on its own has a pretty negative reputation, but I like to think of it as a quite misunderstood fruit.

Why do I feel like lemons are misunderstood so often?  Well, think about all the different flavors you can add to lemon that not only redeem it but make it awesome.  You can add sugar and water and make lemonade, which is the most popular but still delicious.  If you add a slice of lemon to red wine, it takes the flavor of the wine straight out of this world (I'm serious, try it). Squeeze some lemon over your fish, shrimp or lobster and you're in for a treat.  You can even add enough layers of deliciousness to turn a pile of lemons into one of my favorite desserts: lemon meringue pie.  My point is that the lemon on its own is bitter and unpleasant, but when it's combined with different positive flavors, sweet or savory, it becomes a wonderful experience.  The same can be said of life.  Yes, life will hand you a great big pile of lemons sometimes.  At that point, you have a choice to make.  Will you sit there miserably sucking on lemons or will you go to the grocery store and buy some red wine, sugar and shrimp and make a feast?

As I'm sure you've figured out, my point is about life and the choices we make.  When life hands you lemons, you don't have the option to hand them back.  Also, contrary to what the world wants to tell you, making lemonade is not your only other option.  You can search for whatever positive ingredients you want and make those lemons into your own unique positive experience.  The one thing you cannot do is just give up and suck on a lemon.  That's not joyful for anyone.
